Police has injured several students in Papua New Guinea after opening fire on those who were protesting against Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
Though not yet confirmed, but opposition MPs said four students have been killed in the firing while marching from their campus in Port Moresby towards parliament.
Medical officials said about ten students had been seriously injured and admitted to hospital.
Conflicting reports of casualties have been circulated over media and social media. An unnamed aid agency said four students have been killed at a clinic on the campus in the Waigani suburb.
Video footage shows tear gas and students running for cover. Firing shots could be heard.
An eyewitness said smoke coming out from a dormitory at the university was seen.
The students were demanding the PM should answer the corruption allegations.
The PM has denied any wrongdoing and said will not step down.
For weeks the country has been engulfed by political tension. Students in thousands have been boycotting their classes demanding stepping down of the PM.
Transparency International ranked Papua New Guinea in 2012 as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Two years later, in 2014, the national anti-corruption watchdog accused the PM as fraud and an arrest warrant was issued too, but not carried out until now.
