NYC Approves New Policies For Healthier Fast Food For Children

The fast foods need to be healthier and with this goal a new policy in New York has been approved. With this the food meals coming with toys would have less overall calories and also less of fat as well as sodium.

According to senior author Marie Bragg from NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, such policies is to be created that would nudge toward healthier behaviors. More nutrition is also to be added to the meal through vegetables, fruit and whole grains.

A study was conducted by NYU Longone Medical Center researchers at Burger King, McDonald’s and Wendy’s and found noticeable difference can be achieved by legislation in the battle against childhood obesity.

Dr Brian Elbel of NYU Langone Medical Center said if the provisions are met, about 54 calories can be saved from children’s meals and this is about 10 percent reduction in calories.

The proposed bill was introduced for the first time in 2011 and last year it was re-submitted. Below are the specific limitations for meals as proposed:

In the NYC the childhood obesity is a high matter of concern and it is said half of all elementary school children are not a healthy weight. Same is the case with the Head Start children too, said city’s department of health.
