Fire Broke At Dormitory Of Thailand’s Pitakiatwittaya School; 18 Children Dead

At least eighteen girls have been killed in a fire at school dormitory in Thailand at around 11:00 p.m. local time on Sunday (12 midnight Saturday ET).

The cause of fire is not yet known to the school authorities or investigating officers.

The private Pitakiatwittaya School Christian elementary school has been operating in Chiang Rai Province for past five years. It teaches from pre-elementary to grade six to about 140 students and is well known for providing free education to hill tribe children.

A total of 30 girls between the age group of 5 and 12 were sleepingin the dormitory. Firefighters rescued 20 girls including five injured by scaling the walls of the building with ladders.

Chief of the Chiang Rai’s fire unit Sawang Momdee said they tried to save everyone but the fire spread very fast.

The school authority has announced the campus will be closed on Friday and there will be no classes due to the blaze.

Most of the students imparting education at the school belong to poor families from surrounding villages. Christian charity offers the free education and free accommodation to the students.
